<<What about a SD and BSD version? What are the material volume figures
you're using? Just assume the thing is a cylinder of a some size?
What thickness (or I guess armor value would be the thing here)?
>>
The density of the rockets lead one to believe that most of the
volume is supporting structure, of whatever shape, thus it
makes a passible estimate to use armor values as a mode of
comparison.

I haven't done SD or BSD versions, because these were developed
for Steve's FF&S Trillion Credit Squadron-by-email game, which
starts at TL10. He's still got openings, if you are interested...

<<
I kinda like the idea of big military ships using fusion drives... makes
large marshalling areas away from the major world(s) make sense. In CT
really big ships usually didn't land (like above 5000tons, right?).
That might be Imperial military standards... ships 5kt and below are
fitted with HEPlaR for operating near commercial traffic. Big ships
would have a small HEPlaR as a backup, and for close ship operations.
>>
Well, we've always argued that HEPlaR are just a big a torch as
a Fusion Rocket, only less efficient. So... for docking, my ships carry
very small chemical rocket packs for docking maneuvers, and
otherwise just watch where they point their torches. For
atmospheric operations, that's what the above free item
(Fusion Ram-Jet) was developed for. In GURPS Vehicles, it is
known as the Fusion Air-Ram... A small fusion reactor heats
intake air and spits a superheated air-jet out the back, along with
its own exhaust. The exhaust is mildly radioactive--not dangerous,
but trackable with a Geiger counter or similar detector... and is
about as hot as a jet engine of similar thrust.

A thought in light of recent discussions of ship crews:

Does anyone have access to resonably detailed information on crew levels for
modern (20th Century) Ships? Not the usual Officers vs O/R sort of thing, but
something offering enough detail concerning roles or department to permit
validation (or otherwise) of some of the formulae GDW uses for calculating
crew sizes?

Granted we are not going to find out the required support crew for a 500 Ton
jump drive, but we would at least have some hard data points to throw
around, expecially on things like numbers and stations of officers, or
required "Steward" and "Medical" staffing.

Anyone who has such data could send it to me: I would be happy to analyze it
and reportto the group.

The Jayhawk Enforcer (Far Trader) - C has been designed as an anti-piracy
vessel under the terms of the Request For Tender put forth by the Congress
of Rimward States in 1202. The class, although limited in offensive punch
should be able to hold its own defensively, even against Gazelle Class
Close Escort class vessels. Armor, maneuver drive and sensor upgrades will
increase survivability and allow the launch of onboard fighter craft. The
class has been designed with a minimal hanger capable of holding either a
15 ton Avalon class fighter or 20 ton Camelot Class Gig (PAW) at the
Admiralty's choice. The fighter carries a TL-12 180 Mj Laser Lance while
the Gig carries a TL-12 256 Mj Particle Accelerator Weapon.

Another companion vessel to the Jayhawk Enforcer, the Camelot Gig carries a
fairly substantial, if short-ranged punch to take on heavier vessels. The
Particle Accelerator spinal mount will provide a nasty surprise to
predatory vessels.

Note that the cost of the Enforcer plus Avalon comes in at MCr 127.35 while
the Enforcer plus Camelot is MCr 134.14 (no standard discount factored in).
The listed price of the Jayhawk is MCr 57.50 (presumed to be 80%
discounted price). 200% of the prototype Jayhawk cost = MCr 143.75. Thus
the Enforcer plus one of either small craft comes in at below 200% of base.

I'll admit blowing away TEDs sounds boring, unless you like wargaming. (Which
I hope to do, once I get a gaming table set up for Striker II.) For
role-playing, I prefer more thinking.

That said, the original CT set of adventures was fairly standard for the
first few years. Mercenary tickets, bodyguard jobs, stopping rogue
technology, smuggling, and highjacking (or defending) starships about sums it
up. It took a while for different types of adventures to be written.

I agree about the Reformation Coalition's morals. We came, we saw, we
plundered. However, there lie the seeds for a political adventure. (Which
I'll write if I get some spare time.)

Question: how many people are interested in non-combat adventures within the
Reformation Coalition? Shalom is working on a good missing-persons adventure
as part of his Aurora material, and I've been tinkering with the
abovementioned political campaign (set on Aubaine).

Howdy,

there are a couple of problems I notice right off the bat. All the
ships are too massive to have the g ratings you give them.

The Jayhawk as designed is about 1.8 gs, not 3 (it doesn't fall into the
15*hull_displacement (tons) rules for gs, so you divide thrust by mass
to get gs (total thrust MW*20)/Mass.

The Avalon is 1.3 gs, and the Gig is 1.4gs. In all cases for BL you'd
have to round down.

You wouldn't know this if you had an old copy of BL and not FFS
(although my BL doesn't seem to have any indication of a version on it
at all (the only copyright type info I see is on the back of the ship
design booklet and it doesn't have any print run info or anything)).

On a related note, I haven't had the $$ to get RSB yet ($1300 plumbing
disaster :-( but I noticed that the PAW fighter in there is way over
mass, but has the right thrust MW for an uncorrected design (ie: it
doesn't perform as advertised)---at least I think it was that one. How are the
others? As soon as I have some bucks to spare I'll have it handy ($20,
yeesh!).

Is the volume you list the minimum volume, and the rest of the values
are per kl?

Also, you used the armor values for comparison, but what % of the unit
kl did you assume was structure (That way I could do the SD, and BSD
versions and have 'em work with your stuff)?

Huh? Roger, could you clarify that statement a bit? DGP, to my knowledge,
has been out of business since about 1992, when TNE got fired up. They
shut down their Oregon phone number a while back and closed the doors. If

Well, compared to CT, TNE is "dark." In CT, the only wars were with
other people. The only Civil War that had occurred in the Third
Imperium prior to the Big Oops of 1116 hadn't disrupted normal functioning
much -- it wasn't a far step from 'business as usual,' apparently. TNE's a
bit of a ray of sunshine compared to MT, though. Gosh, that Civil War.
Talk
about a hopeless situation...<<

That's what I meant but "comparatively," Wes. CT was a bright shining
universe for the most part, filled with subtlety as opposed to the
hyperbole of throwing the entire Imperium in the toilet.

Yeah, the Civil War was hopeless. I think "Hard Times" communicated that
better than anything else. I ran that adventure in '91. I only wish GDW
saw fit to make the players' efforts worth _something_. The achievement of
the adventure, helping to secure the Khavle Accordment pocket empire, was
all for naught. Practically the whole area is listed with zero-level
populations in TNE. <Sigh.>

Responding to Phil's statement about the J-6 transport:

>>I never could understand this big "secrecy" thing when it was well-known,
according to CT Supp.6 "Fighting Ships..." that the Imperial Navy had
numbers of J6 Fleet Couriers. If the Imperial Navy was using them it
only seems logical that other Imp. gov. branches were too.<<

Seems to me that anyone could build a J-6 ship if they want to and have
access to a TL-15+ shipyard. Still, I like the whole secrecy thing. It
lends an aura of mystery and intrigue to the game.

Sorry for the delay, but it took awhile for me to get this put together.
It is my first attempt at design, so please look it over carefully for
errors (the spreadsheet all seems to work out properly, so I think it is
okay).

The Avalon class fighter, mounting a powerful laser lance, has been
designed as a companion vessel to the Jayhawk Enforcer (Far Trader) - C
anti-piracy vessel. The fighter is agile at 4G accel and carries a strong
punch at short and medium ranges.
